STURGIS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The former Sturgis Chief of Police who was previously charged in a drunk driving crash has been sentenced, according to a report from WOOD TV Wednesday.
Previously, former police chief Geoffrey Smith resigned from his position after a drunk driving incident last August.
Smith was involved in a head-on crash on North Lakeview Avenue the night of August 15, when he swerved into the opposite lane and smashed into a parked vehicle.
This caused a chain-reaction crash which damaged three parked cars. Witnesses said Smith was visibly intoxicated at the time of the crash.
He was then placed on administrative leave and later resigned, writing that he had “made a mistake” and accepted responsibility for the crash.
Following this occurrence, he was later charged by Attorney General Dana Nessel this past January with several counts related to driving while intoxicated.
On Wednesday, WOOD TV reported that Smith was in court and sentenced for these charges. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving while visibly impaired, while all other charges were dropped under his agreement.
He will now face 90 days of alcohol monitoring and 12 months of probation, in addition to sobriety treatment, according to the report. However, the judge says the probation could be dropped at six months as long as he complies.
He will also have to pay outstanding court costs and restitution.
